Gaddafi Has Mariah Carey ‘Embarrassed’

Now that revelations about the multi-million dollar paychecks the A-list celebrities were cashing from Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s kids, publicists are working overtime.

Mariah Carey turns 41 this month but still hopes to play the bimbo card of 20 years – and 60 pounds – ago.

“I was naive and unaware of who I was booked to perform for,” Carey said in a statement undoubtedly written by one of many celebrity publicists that were working overtime this week. “I feel horrible and embarrassed to have participated in this mess.”

Beyoncé is likewise playing us for fools when she blames “a third-party promoter” for booking her for the 5-song, $2 million New Years gig with the Gaddafis.

“Ultimately we as artists are to be held accountable,” Carey’s statement said.

Plenty of artists boycotted South Africa during apartheid and more and more avoid Israel today. Perhaps Carey, Beyoncé, Nelly Furtado, Jay-Z, Bon Jovi, Miranda Kerr and Lindsay Lohan didn’t get the memo (well, Lohan can’t say ‘no’ to free booze and drugs no matter who’s offering).

None of these celebrities expressed any regret about their dalliances with the Gaddafis when they were first reported in the New York tabloids two years ago. But it was just the New York tabloids then.

Now that it’s CNN and CBS and the BBC letting the world know of the amorality and greed of our pop icons (who are already mega-millionaires), they claim ignorance and say the money they received will be given to charity.

It’s not restitution and it doesn’t set things straight.

In 1986, Gaddafi bombed a Berlin disco frequented by US soldiers – two U.S. sergeants were killed and 230 people were injured. Gaddafi blew 270 people out of the sky over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988.

This month alone more than 2,000 Libyans have given their lives to be rid of Gaddafi and his brood. How many were sitting in torture cells while Mariah, Beyoncé, Nelly Furtado and others were living la vida loca in St. Barts with the Gaddafi family?

  1. Come on – today Gaddafi, tomorrow the Saudi Royal Family. Does the official US refuse today to import Oil from the saudis? Why should we apply higher moral standards for singers than for states?
