Hey, Hey, We’re (Most Of) The Monkees

Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork, will reunite for a series of 10 gigs in the UK this May. Stops include in Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Birmingham, and one at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The band, best known for “The Monkees” television show that launched them in 1966, had nine top 40 hits including Daydream BelieverI’m a Believer and Last Train to Clarksville.

Critics initially slammed the manufactured nature of the band, with The Byrds going so far as to mock them in their single So You Want to be a Rock ’n’ Roll Star.

While John Lennon dismissed them as “the Marx Brothers of Rock,” in 1967, The Monkees outsold both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined.

The fourth original band member, Mike Nesmith, is not participating because he, apparently, still has hopes of being taken seriously as a musician.
