Mom Charged In Dismembering Daughter

Zahra Baker’s stepmother, Elisa Baker, was officially indicted in the murder of the disabled North Carolina child on Monday.

The 10-year-old Zahra, a cancer survivor who lost her leg at age 5 and her hearing in both ears, garnered nationwide attention after she was reported missing in October. Her decapitated and dismembered body was found a month later. The little girl’s head has not been recovered.

Prosecutors said that Elisa Baker planted a fake ransom note and killed Zahra two weeks before she was reported missing. Even worse, authorities charged, she physically, verbally and psychologically abused her young stepdaughter.

“The defendant took advantage of a position of trust or confidence including a domestic relationship, to commit the offense,” the indictment charged, according to CNN.

Zahra’s father, Adam Baker, said Monday that he was happy his daughter was finally getting the justice she deserved. The Australian-born man, who was not charged, said he was manipulated by his wife.

“Elisa is very manipulative, um, abusive…to me,” he told WBTV. “Very controlling. Plus with work, I was gone first thing in the morning and didn’t get home til late. Um, was told that Zahra was in bed because Zahra normally went to bed early. I checked every night and from what I could tell she was in bed. It looked like she, something was in bed.”

Elisa Baker told police that it was her husband who cut up the girl’s body before disposing it in several locations around the couple’s home, court documents showed.

Elisa Baker was indicted on a bigamy charge last month, accused of marrying the girl’s father before divorcing her previous husband.
