Queen Isabella: No Regrets

During a visit to the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Hebron, Spain’s Foreign Minister Trinidad Jiménez came under verbal attack by members of a settler group that had requested to meet with her. Settlers shouted “anti-Semite,” “Israel-hater” and “Get out of here!” as Jiménez left.

The settler group had hoped to persuade Jiménez to help stop the Spanish government’s support for construction of Palestinian apartments in Hebron, near the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba.

Palestinian control of Hebron is limited to the 10-square mile “H1” section, in which 120,000 Palestinians live.

In “H2,” 500 Jewish settlers live among 30,000 Palestinians. Palestinian movement is heavily restricted by Israeli forces and they are not permitted to use the the principal thoroughfare, Shuhada Street.

The Jerusalem Post reported that the settlers requested the meeting to present “information regarding the dangers the apartment project poses to the city’s Jewish residents.

“Its goal is to create a hostile demographic buffer, with a potential for terrorism, which could erupt at any moment, the heart of the tiny Jewish area, near the holy place – Tomb of the Patriarchs,” and reminded Jiménez of Spain’s expulsion of Jews in the 1400s.

“Does the Spanish government intend to contribute to an additional expulsion of Jews from Hebron?” asked one settler, according to the Jerusalem Post.
