Violence In Egypt – Will It Escalate?

As anticipated, violence has broken out in Tahrir Square. For now, the army does not appear to be involved – which is very good news – and most reports are of clashes between pro- and anti-Mubarak camps using weaponry comprised largely of sticks, metal bars and Molotov cocktails. Sporadic gunfire has been reported. Considering the circumstances, it’s could be a lot worse.

The official Egyptian news agency MENA issued a statement that the number of people wounded in violence in Cairo on Wednesday increased to 611 from 403.

Tweeting on the clashes from Cairo, NBC journalist Richard Engel described the scene as “a running battle.. Protesters worry pro mubarak forces, now in retreat, will bring in reinforcements.”
