The Civil War and Reconstruction Era, 1845-1877 | Open Yale Courses

One of the best things about the web is the opportunity to sit in on (or lie down through) some world-class education.

Personally, I’ve been listening to the great David Blight present the history of the Civil War and, of most interest to me, Reconstruction. While even Andrew Johnson supported abolition of slavery, Professor Blight illuminates the legislative and societal battles over the passage and meaning of the 14th & 15th Amendments and how the disputes foreshadowed what would be an additional century of humiliating oppression for African-Americans and the eternal shame of a nation conceived by the notion that mankind’s inalienable rights were conferred by God. Both video and audio downloads are available for free.

The second link below is to the entire curriculum – including science, philosophy and religion courses – available for free download from Yale Open Courses.
